VEIL.AI to build next-generation anonymization and synthetic data capability for six European children’s hospitals’ ecosystem

VEIL.AI – the most experienced European health tech company in health data anonymization – has partnered with pediatric hospitals and technology companies across Europe to enable transborder data collaborations of sensitive health data for research.

The PHEMS consortium has been awarded 7 million euros by Horizon Europe and UK funding agencies to facilitate innovation of data-driven tools and services for wellbeing, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of care for pediatric patients. The consortium will spearhead an ambitious pilot project that aims to establish seamless data collaboration between six children’s hospitals in Europe: Helsinki University Hospital (Finland), Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Netherlands), Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Anna Meyer in Florence (Italy), Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona (Spain), Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London (United Kingdom), and Bērnu Klīniskā Universitātes Slimnīca (Latvia).

Transborder data collaborations among hospitals in Europe can be time consuming and are not always easy. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) governs how the personal data of individuals in the EU may be processed and transferred. If the health data is anonymized GDPR does not apply since anonymous data is not personal data.

The PHEMS consortium will develop a decentralized health data ecosystem that is complemented with next-generation anonymization technology to secure privacy of the patients. The new AI-enhanced technology creates extremely high-quality anonymized and synthetic data.

The success of the ecosystem will accelerate the development of new therapies for children, the assessment of pediatric care outcomes and the advancement of new technology solutions such as artificial intelligence in pediatrics. By harnessing the power of VEIL.AI’s next-generation data anonymization, data collaboration across international borders for research purposes will become easier and faster for hospitals, ultimately improving the quality of patient care.
